Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and BARB’s hovercraft were called out on Tuesday (June 20th) to reports of three people crossing the treacherous River Axe estuary between Weston and Brean.
The three young men were already quite a distance across and were steadily making their way to the safety of the Brean side when they were spotted.
Weston Coastguards were able to use their loudhailer to advise them to walk to safety.
“We directed them to our truck for some safety advice about the dangers of the mud and fast flowing tides,” said a Coastguard spokesman.
“We established that they were staying in Weston and were having a walk before going home later in the day.”
“We decided to avoid them trying to cross the river back to Weston we would drive them to the sluice gates at Diamond Farm and direct them across on the cycle path that is due to open soon.”
“We also issued them with some bottled water as it was 32 degrees and they had a long walk ahead of them.”
“They all said they regretted their actions and had learnt an important lesson regarding the rivers and mud.”
“Thanks to the guys working there who stopped the workers to let us walk them across.”
