Burnham-On-Sea film enthusiast Molly Harding, who was last year nominated for the national award ‘Young Film Critic of the Year’, reviews Breaking Dawn which is now showing at Burnham’s Ritz Cinema in Victoria Street this week…
Breaking Dawn (12A)
In the penultimate instalment of the much drooled over Twilight saga we see Edward and Bella tying the knot and Bella becoming pregnant with a half vampire baby proving the true course of love can never run smoothly.
First and for most I would like to say that this is the most bizarre and messed up film I have seen all year – twi-hards will love it! The pros are that it is completely true to the book and gets off to a promising and romantic start of longing glances and refreshing realism that took me back to the first instalment, my outright favourite in the series so far.
But, coinciding with my statement that true love can never run smoothly, neither can the film. Despite the charming first half the second half has moments of awfulness. The make-up and effects on Bella were absolutely astounding but the same cannot be said for the talking wolves or bizarre imprinting sequence (no spoiler intended!).
It is not a negative that this film is very gruesome at parts, much more graphic than the last films and I would definitely advise more sensitive under 12’s perhaps to steer clear or get a parent to view it first as it can be verging on some sort of strange horror film at times.
Breaking Dawn Part 1 has major flaws but the performances from the three leads just keep getting better, Kristin Stewart in particular, and despite my criticisms it still caused the audience to erupt at the end with anticipate. DO NOT leave before the credits!
We’ve come this far to the fourth film and this instalment still leaves hope for the epic finale we all want it to be.
A bizarre, but occasionally real addition to the saga – 3/5
