Burnham RNLI crew assist with recovery of sunken boat at jetty
Burnham-On-Sea RNLI’s crew helped to recover a partially-sunken speedboat near the town’s jetty on Saturday evening, May 7th.
The 4.5m Bayliner boat went down at around 6pm and the RNLI crew were called out shortly afterwards by the Coastguard to help with the recovery.
The owner of the boat, a 35 year-old-male from Coventry, had been trying to launch his craft from the jetty when the boat had been swamped by water. The launching trailer was also swept off the side of the jetty by the waves.
The lifeboat crew kitted up, and entered the water to hold the boat on the slipway against strong side currents and waves.
Holding lines were attached to the vessel, and the boat was secured until the tide turned at approximately 7.40pm.
The Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard team later removed the badly damaged vessel and trailer.
One experienced onlooker remarked that the conditions were too rough for launching from the jetty, and mentioned the importance of checking the local weather before trying to launch a boat in unfamiliar surroundings.
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguard Officer Steve Bird said: “The boat encountered difficulties near the town’s jetty. After surveying the scene, we called on the RNLI to help. The team played a major part in helping with the recovery.”
