Thousands of people headed to Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront on Sunday (August 19th) for the town’s rescue services day.
Big crowds filled the South Esplanade to see displays and demonstrations from over 30 rescue charities and emergency services.
A fly-past by a Coastguard helicopter and Civil Air Patrol microlights were among the displays, alongside rescue demonstrations by BARB hovercrafts, Coastguards, RNLI lifeboat crews and lifeguards.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Bill Hancock, who opened the event with Mayoress Frances Hancock, said: “It was great to see so many organisations along the seafront and crowds of visitors coming out to see them.”
“I am full of admiration for all the volunteers’ work and the work they do in our community, responding 24 hours a day.”
The weather stayed dry and breezy, and led to the gig rowing race being cancelled due to the choppy sea conditions.
The event has been run for 15 years by BARB Search & Rescue, whose hovercrafts were on show to visitors.
Organiser Roger Flower from BARB said: “We were very pleased with how the event went and are very grateful for all the support shown to the many organisations. We are so lucky to have so many groups here in the Burnham area.”
Among the crowds was former MP Tessa Munt who visited the volunteers during the day.
