Burnham-On-Sea is to make a bid for financial compensation from the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) following its decision last year not to award the town £750,000 of funding towards the modernisation of the town centre.
Cllr Neville Jones revealed at the latest meeting of the town council that a “significant claim” for aborted project costs was being submitted to SWRDA.
He also claimed that Somerset County Council did not want to deliver the Civic Pride scheme – which aims to deliver a cut-down version of the aborted regeneration project – owing to a lack of resources, but a high level meeting is being arranged to show the false economy of this decision.
Cllr Jones said “time is of the essence” owing to budgetary problems at Sedgemoor District Council and the need to undertake construction outside of the peak season.
It follows the severe blow last June when the South West Regional Development Agency decided not to award Burnham any regeneration funding.
