Burnham-On-Sea is to receive £159,000 of compensation from the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) following its decision last year not to award the town vital funding towards the modernisation of the town centre.
Sedgemoor District Council’s Corporate Director Doug Bamsey revealed at the Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday evening (April 7th) that the council’s claim for the aborted project costs has been successfully settled.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com after the meeting: “We are very pleased that SWRDA has confirmed that are settling the issue. £159,000 is a good amount to cover the costs incurred by the Civic Pride team over several years.”
And Cllr Neville Jones welcomed the news, telling Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is great news for Burnham. The money has been winkled out of SWRDA through constant pressure from Burnham’s Civic Pride team.”
“We would have liked a settlement closer to £350,000 but are very pleased with this figure, which will enable a number of town centre improvements to be made.”
A meeting of the Civic Pride steering group will be held on Thursday (April 8th) to start discussing how the money can be spent in the town.
It follows the severe blow last June when the South West Regional Development Agency decided not to award Burnham £750,000 of expected regeneration funding.
