Members of Burnham-On-Sea’s Chamber of Trade met MP David Heathcoat-Amory at a special meeting in the town over the weekend to discuss how to take forward plans for regeneration.
It follows the recent decision by the South West Regional Development Agency not to award £750,000 of vital funding to the project to modernise Burnham town centre.
The Chamber of Trade’s Chairman Geoff Shickle, Treasurer Nigel Kemp and former Chairman Alex Turco met Mr Heathcoat-Amory at The Princess (as pictured), where talks were held on the next steps for taking the proposals forward.
“The regeneration of Burnham was dealt a blow by the SWRDA decision, but the project is definitely not dead. The town centre urgently needs improvements and Mr Heathcoat-Amory told us he is in support of this and is keen to ensure that we don’t miss out to Bridgwater or Weston,” said Chairman Geoff Shickle.
“The MP has sent letters to SWRDA and Lord Mandelson urging them to re-consider the decision not to award funding, but has not yet received a response. He assured us that he would be following these up and continuing to push for funding for the town.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com understands a Civic Pride meeting was also held last Wednesday when various projects were discussed to deliver ‘quick win’ improvements in the town centre over the next 18 months. Further details are expected to be announced later in the year.
