Plans to modernise Burnham-On-Sea have moved a step closer with the news that the town has been awarded £350,000 in regeneration cash – with the possibility of several millions to follow.
The money has been given to the Burnham Regeneration Partnership by the South West Regional Development Agency Civic Pride Initiative to fund detailed plans for the redesign of the High Street, Princess Street area and The Esplanade (pictured here in the original plans).
The Regeneration Partnership and Sedgemoor District Council now have a year to submit specific plans, so Burnham’s redevelopment work could begin as early as 2008.
In a statement, District Council Chief Executive Doug Bamsey said: “The serious commitment of substantial funds is a major breakthrough. We will be working with local businesses and this process will take a good number of months.”
In 2003, the Regeneration Partnership published its plan for sustainable regeneration in Burnham and this September it submitted its final bid to the SWRDA.
The plans include banning traffic and extending the pavements in the High Street, re-surfacing and installing sculptures on The Esplanade and creating a civic precinct on Princess Street.
