Traders in Burnham-On-Sea have this week welcomed the move of ten ‘ugly’ recycling banks which had been the first thing many visitors saw when they stepped off coaches.
Burnham-On-Sea Chamber Of Trade has been campaigning for over a year to get recycling skips re-located from the rear of Morrisons supermarket in Pier Street, where coaches park and drop off visitors, in a bid to encourage more trippers to the town.
After initially agreeing the move last autumn, Somerset Waste Partnership has this month followed up its promise and re-located the waste banks to the nearby Lynton Road car park.
The news has this week been welcomed by the Chamber of Trade’s Louise Parkin and Sonya Fudge, pictured above, who launched the campaign in 2009, as reported here.
Louise told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m very pleased about the move. This is a step in the right direction to helping Burnham’s economy and encouraging more coaches and visitors to return, thereby boosting trade all year round.”
The news comes amid growing concern from traders about the number of trippers who visit out-of-town areas, such as Sanders Garden World at Brent Knoll, instead of Burnham.
