Recycling centre thief caught in CCTV drama in Highbridge

-

A Highbridge man has this week been fined by magistrates after admitting stealing from a recycling centre.

CCTV footage shows Leslie Paul Ash carefully put on a mask before going into a recycling site in the town late at night.

But he was spotted by Somerset Waste Partnership staff and the police soon saw through his disguise.

Mr Ash, 39, of Talbot Close in Highbridge, admitted two charges of theft at Taunton magistrates on Thursday (2nd October) and asked for several other offences to be also taken into consideration.

The items taken from Highbridge recycling centre included batteries, computers and angling equipment.

He was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay £100 compensation to recycling site operator Viridor with £40 costs and £60 victim surcharge.

As he became the second criminal convicted within weeks of a recycling site offence with the help of CCTV, Somerset Waste Partnership warned thieves to stay away from its recycling sites. A Bridgwater man has previously received a 12-month conditional discharge with £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

A Somerset Waste Partnership spokesperson said: “Anyone committing a crime at a recycling centre can expect to be caught and convicted.”
