Rise in online Xmas shopping prompts appeal over cardboard waste
Householders in the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area are being asked not to put out too much cardboard at once with their recycling this Christmas.
The appeal comes as more than a quarter of Christmas spending is expected to take place on the Web this year, leading to a big increase in cardboard packaging being put out for kerbside collections.
Somerset Waste Partnership’s Steve Read told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have always advised that large amounts of cardboard should be taken to one of Somerset’s 18 recycling sites.”
“It could also be spread out over several weeks at the kerbside or some card can assist the mix in home composting.”
“If storage space for cardboard on a recycling truck is filled, it must waste time going back to the depot to unload and then returning to its rounds, which adds to costs and could mean missed collections.”
“If too much card is put out, crews may need to leave it behind and should attach a sticker to explain why.”
