A dedicated Burnham-On-Sea fundraiser has been presented with an award to recognise her four decades of voluntary work for the Royal British Legion.
Mavis Martin, 85, received an official Royal British Legion ’40 years badge’ from Robert McDonald, the legion’s county chairman, during a ceremony on Sunday June 12th which coincided with a cream tea to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Over 45 people, including Burnham and Highbridge’s Mayor and Mayoress Michael and Maria Clarke, attended the function at the legion’s headquarters in Victoria Street, Burnham, as pictured here.
Mavis, who served between 1955-1959 in the Women’s Royal Army Corps, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Since those days in the 1960s I have always had a strong affinity with our armed forces and have been keen to help the Legion in any way I can. I carry out regular fundraising collections at Burnham-On-Sea’s Tesco store and other local locations.”
Those present at the event, which was supported by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, enjoyed celebratory cream teas to mark the Queen’s birthday.
A special cake decorated with a photo of Her Majesty, was cut by the Mayor, as pictured above. Burnham RBL Chairman Bernard Spragg said: “We’re delighted with how it went – it was a fitting celebration for such a special occasion.”
And Mr McDonald, the legion’s county chairman, added: “It’s really wonderful to see the Burnham-On-Sea branch thriving again after being in such a vulnerable position 18 months ago. My congratulations go to the whole Burnham team for all they have done to make it successful again.”
