Burnham-On-Sea’s railway history is to be featured on national TV tonight (Friday).
‘Walking Britain’s Lost Railways’ on Channel 5 will focus on the former Somerset and Dorset line, which once ran through Highbridge and into Burnham-On-Sea.
The episode, which airs at 9pm, will begin on Burnham-On-Sea beach and includes an interview with local historian John Strickland from North Sedgemoor Local History Group.
In this fifth episode of the Channel 5 series, presenter Rob Bell walks the route of the line, which once connected Bournemouth and Bath until the so-called Beeching Axe in 1966.
John told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This episode gives viewers a fascinating look at the line’s history, exploring the route it took and some of the stories along the way.”
The series also reveals why this lost line actually bankrupted many of the investors who had funded it.
