UK’s top radio controlled racing enthusiasts gather in Brean

-

Radio-controlled motor racing enthusiasts from across the UK will gather near Brean this weekend to compete in a top competition.

Round three of the British Radio Car Association (BRCA) National Championships series will be held on Saturday 4th June and Sunday 5th June at the Mendip Model Racing Circuit in Accommodation Road between Brean and Bleadon.

“The weekend will see the top 50 drivers in the country competing for overall honours and valuable championship points within the British series which spans the country over nine rounds,” the circuit’s Robert Mckenna told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“This class of radio control motor racing is often regarded as the pinnacle of ‘Formula One’ of radio controlled racing as the cars are the most technically and aerodynamically advanced, featuring 2.5 brake horsepower 3.5cc racing engines plus four wheel drive. These cars will lap the circuit at an average speed of an incredible 85mph!” he added.

Saturday 4th June will be a free practice day, where drivers will arrive from 9am until 6pm to begin the process of tuning their cars to the circuit and ambient conditions.

Sunday’s racing begins at 10am with four rounds of heats to determine qualifying positions for the finals, which take place on Sunday afternoon up until around 4pm. Members of the public are welcome to watch the action.

Local entries for the event are Robert Mckenna (Xray RX8 Picco), Ashley Gouveia (Serpent 966 NovaRossi), Angelo Bruschini (Mugen MRX5 NovaRossi), Mike Manning (Motonica P81rs Mega) and Amando Ludena (Serpent 966 Mega).

Built on a former landfill site, the Mendip Model Racing Circuit was officially opened in 1976 by John Button, father of 2009 F1 World Champion Jenson Button. The circuit quickly became the UK’s leading tarmac racing circuit for Radio Control Model racing cars and during the 1980s and 1990s it hosted many of Europe’s leading events. This year, it is a regular on the calendar for several rounds of various national championship series.
