Lifeline thrown to Princess Hall by Burnham-On-Sea town councillors

-

The threat of closure looming over Burnham’s Princess Hall appears to have eased this week after town councillors announced they are planning the possible launch of a charitable trust to oversee the facility.

A working party of town councillors and Sedgemoor district officials had a “very constructive” meeting to discuss a way forward to save the Princess Street building, pictured right.

“The outcome is that we’d like to form a charitable trust to manage and run The Princess,” announced Burnham’s Mayor, Eric Gill, on Monday night.

“To that end, we’re very interested in hearing from anyone who is interested in offering us expertise. We need a solicitor, accountant and other relevant resources to volunteer their help to keep this facility running.”

Earlier in the year, Sedgemoor District Council had raised fears that the facility could shut for good after it confirmed it wanted to cut costs by possibly giving up ownership of the building.

Cllr Gill said a number of questions remain unanswered – particularly with regards to funding – but a list has been formed and this is to be sent to Sedgemoor District Council.

“The questions cover issues such as who will pay for structural and electrical surveys, the insurance costs and maintenance. We need answers to these questions and others to establish the true cost of taking it on.”

A further meeting is scheduled for June 19th to discuss the plans further.
