Burnham-On-Sea postal staff set to join nationwide strike action

-

Thousands of pieces of mail in Burnham-On-Sea are set to be delayed when postal workers hold a strike in the town later this week.

Staff at Burnham’s sorting office in Dunstan Road are planning to down tools on Friday (October 23rd) as part of a nationwide strike involving more than 100,000 Royal Mail staff.

Derek Clash, regional spokesman for the Communication Workers Union, said: “We don’t want to strike, and if Royal Mail and the government see sense we won’t have to.”

Postal workers across the UK voted three to one for national industrial action following local walkouts.

The union said it made a ‘genuine offer’ to avert the strike and accused Royal Mail of rejecting it without proper consideration.

It added that Royal Mail is attempting to “bulldoze” modernisation plans through with “bullying and intimidation”.

Royal Mail said the strike is an “appalling and unjustified attack” on customers, showing a “reckless disregard” for people who depend on the company.
