A body washed up on Portishead beach on Thursday afternoon (August 10th) could be that of a missing swimmer who sparked a major air and sea search at Brean earlier this week.
A police spokesman confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that a body had been found on Portishead beach at around 2pm on Thursday.
But police are saying it is too early to link it to the incident on Tuesday night, in which Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea and Weston joined forces with lifeboats from Weston and an RAF helicopter from Devon to search the waters of the River Axe for a swimmer believed to be missing.
No sign of a person was found, and Coastguards from Weston and Burnham also found no further clues after searching both sides of the river at low tide on Wednesday – as pictured above.
But members of the public onboard a boat in the Axe estuary on Tuesday evening said they had seen a person in the water and warned him not to attempt to cross the river. Minutes later, shouts for help had been heard – although no swimmer was seen.
Police said on Thursday afternoon it may be some time before the identity of the body is known and whether it is connected to this week’s incident at Brean.
