A display of 200 silk poppies was unveiled in Burnham-On-Sea’s Manor Gardens on Sunday as part of a special tribute to those who died in conflicts.
During the build-up to Burnham’s annual Remembrance Day service, the silk poppies are being sold to the public across the town to mark the centenary of World War 1.
It is hoped that 1,000 of the £1 poppies will be bought from supermarkets in Burnham and Highbridge including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Lidl, and at this Friday’s Burnham Farmers Market, to join the display of floral tributes in aid of the Royal British Legion.
Sunday’s ceremony was led by piper Gavin Utting, pictured, and attended by Mayor Martin Cox, MP Tessa Munt, Town Crier Alastair Murray and local dignitaries and residents.
Organiser Gaynor Brown from the Burnham Poppy Appeal told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We’re delighted with the support shown so far – it was great to lay around 200 poppies on Sunday. We’d love to see 1,000 poppies here, which is our target. It would look very special. There are plenty of opportunities for people to buy one over the next few weeks.”
