Burnham-On-Sea’s Academy Swim Team is celebrating this week after scooping second place at a top regional competition.
The team was delighted to be selected to swim in the Tim Bratchel Memorial Relay Gala in Horfield, Bristol.
The team of 36 swimmers, aged from 8-40+, were up against stiff competition from seven well-established clubs.
But from the outset the Academy Swim Team proved they more than deserved to be racing against top teams from Bristol and beyond.
“Cheered on by an amazing support team of parents, friends, officials and coaches, the swimmers produced some phenomenal swims, capturing many personal bests with superb starts, turns and take-overs,” said the Academy’s Sara Cox Conklin.
“After two hours of hard racing over 36 events, the Academy Swim Team captured second place, which was a fantastic result.”
The final results were: 1st Southwold Swimming Club (241 points), 2nd Academy Swim Team Burnham-On-Sea (166 points), 3rd Bristol Central Swim Club (165 points), 4th Bristol Penguins Swim Club (143 points), 5th Wells & Shepton Mallet Swim Club (132 points), 6th Bristol Henleaze Swim Club (91 points), 7th Norton Radstock Swim Club (90 points), and 8th Bristol Penguins B Swim Club.
The Academy Swim Team will be in action again this weekend at the Clevedon & Chard Open Meet, followed by the hosting of its own annual Academy Swim Team Championships on July 19th, running alongside the Swim Academy’s ‘learn to Swim Stages 2-10’ annual Summer Championships at Burnham Swim & Sports Academy.
For those interested in swimming, The Academy Swim Team currently has five squads training and welcomes new swimmers to come and ‘try-out’.
Those who are not quite at the level of competitive swimming can still enrol in the centre’s UK ASA award-winning Swim School of the year where some of the best instruction in the country is available (as confirmed by the ASA).
