The £220,000 expansion of Burnham-On-Sea’s swimming pool complex is to officially open on June 13th, it has been announced this week.
Construction work on the new health and fitness club at the front of Burnham Swim and Sports Academy in Berrow Road began last year.
Co-owners Mark and Sara Cox-Conklin and project manager Andy Pusill, pictured above, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that the work is now nearing completion.
“We are delighted to be opening these super new modern facilities,” said Mark. “They include a new physio therapy room, plus one of the largest fitness cardio studios in Somerset featuring over 30 classes per week.”
“The new gym features 18 pieces of high-tech equipment. There are also new changing rooms.”
He added: “We’ve taken the decision not to introduce big TVs in every corner – the focus here is on motivating people with people and the Academy Health Club will provide members the opportunity to reach their unique health and fitness goals under the guidance of our expert team.”
“Our primary goal is to teach, educate, motivate and support, and with this underlying concept at our core, members will have access to over 40 instructor-led classes scheduled at varying times of the day within the swimming pool, spinning studio, new cardio room and new Academy gym.”
While the official opening takes place on June 13th, the new facilities are open from Wednesday (June 1st) for visits by prospective members.

This week marks the third anniversary since Mark and Sara took over the pool from Sedgemoor District Council. “The opening of the new health club marks the next stage of our journey here – it is exciting,” added Mark.
The second phase of the pool’s expansion, at a later date, will see a new 15 x 30ft therapy pool introduced with water heated to 90 degrees.
