Hundreds of Burnham swimmers queue up to join new sports academy

-

Swimmers queued for up to two hours to join Burnham-On-Sea’s new Swim & Sports Academy on Saturday (June 21st) when the new owners of the town’s swimming pool held a successful enrolment day.

A long line of people stretched out of Burnham’s Princess Hall and onto the street (as pictured) as swimmers of all ages were eager to be on the academy’s list of those able to use the facility when it officially opens in July.

Swimming pool bosses Sara Cox-Conklin and Mark Conklin told Burnham-On-Sea.com they were “absolutely delighted” by the level of interest.

“We processed 300 applications and had long queues throughout the whole enrolment day. We’re absolutely delighted that Burnham is pulling out all the stops to support us,” said Sara, who is shown at Saturday’s enrolment day.

Classes are due to begin at the new-look pool on Monday July 21st, once work to modernise the building is completed, and enrolments can be made for summer workshops by telephoning 01278 785909.

The pool was managed by Sedgemoor District Council until late last year when spending constraints threatened closure, but Sara and Mark stepped in and successfully acquired the pool’s lease in April.

The event came just days after the pool’s new bosses announced they had signed a deal to implement the Amateur Swimming Association’s National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS). A five-year deal will see the Burnham pool working in partnership with the national governing body until 2013.
