The fate of Burnham-On-Sea swimming pool could be finally be decided later today (Wednesday January 16th) when district councillors discuss proposals to shut the facility as part of cost-cutting measures.
A meeting of the full District Council is to be held in Burnham’s Princess Hall this afternoon to decide the future of the pool – and Burnham-On-Sea.com will have full coverage.
The council claims the pool’s annual £250,000 running costs and £2m of repairs make the site too expensive to run, particularly in light of its £1.8m funding shortfall.
However, a huge campaign to fight the closure has been mounted during recent weeks, with 6,000 people signing a petition, hundreds attending a packed public meeting before Christmas, and dozens of swimmers holding a protest outside the pool clad only in their swimsuits.
Plans to convert the pool site into houses were exclusively unveiled by Burnham-On-Sea.com on Monday, although the district council claims not to have had sight of the scheme. The plans, which were put together in 2006, were apparently only presented to the town council.
