Burnham-On-Sea Swimming Pool celebrates its 30th birthday!
Burnham-On-Sea swimming pool has celebrated its 30th birthday with a number of events marking the milestone.
The official birthday celebration took place on Saturday 27th November 2004 when the Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Ann Bown, and Burnham’s Mayor, Louise Parkin, made several presentations to swimmers who have been using the pool for thirty years and to children who had taken part in a drawing/painting competition.
Our photograph shows the competition winners Curtis (9), Ross (6), Simon (6), Hazel (10) and Becky (11) with Ann and Louise.
Burnham’s paralympic swimming hero Anthony Stephens – who did some of his training at the town’s pool in the run-up to this year’s Athens Games – is also pictured with his one silver and three bronze medals.
Mayor Louise Parkin told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “When you look at the size and quality of this pool it’s fabulous. Some people mock it, but it’s a superb facility that’s really standing the test of time.”
Ann Bown added: “It’s a valuable asset to Burnham and to Sedgemoor as a whole. I actually learnt to swim in this pool and while I remember that I hated diving it was – and still is – a great facility.”
Plans to modernise the pool in coming years are being carried forward as part of Burnham-On-Sea’s regeneration plans.
