Pontin’s, the holiday parks company founded at Brean in 1946 by Fred Pontin, has this week reported a 25% surge in bookings as cash-strapped holidaymakers turn to cheap stay-at-home breaks.
Ian Smith, chief executive, said on Wednesday (July 15th) that the company is in the midst of one of its busiest-ever booking periods.
Mr Smith said: “People are booking very late this year to wait to see if they still have money in their pockets and the weather holds out. And it looks like both.”
A spokesman added that the Brean Sands resort, pictured, is seeing one of its busiest ever seasons.
Jason Brindle, Pontin’s sales and marketing director, added: “Not that long ago millions of people in the UK were travelling to Spain for their traditional summer holidays, taking advantage of cheap flights, food and accommodation made possible by excellent exchange rates. All of that has completely turned upside down.”
Pontin’s recently announced plans for a £50m redevelopment programme of its six chalet parks across the UK, including its Brean Sands site near Burnham-On-Sea.
