Brave teenager praised after helping holidaymakers free from fire

-

A brave teenager who helped holidaymakers out of a burning building at Pontins in Brean earlier this year has received an award for his courage.

Liam Whitworth, 15, kept a cool head when a fire broke out at 2.14am on January 2nd while he was staying on a break at the holiday park.

He went round the building, waking people from their chalets to get them out, and also helped a couple by holding their child while they went back for their baby.

The youngster from Chard has been awarded a Highly Commended certificate at this month’s Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.

His nomination says: “He gathered his family to safety, and even once they were safe, he kept people strong by making cups of tea, cuddling the youngsters and making sure everyone was warm.

“This young lad stayed so calm and we are so very proud of him.”

During the blaze, which Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here, four casualties were taken to hospital suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation and a further casualty was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics.

The cause of the fire was investigated and was found to be accidental due to items left on the cooker.
