Police in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge have received more than 50 expressions of interest from residents keen to become new police volunteers in the two towns.
It comes after PCSOs and officers held several roadshows across the Burnham area during the last few days to explain how locals can join the new Police Volunteer scheme.
Local police teams have been at Sanders Garden World, Morrisons and the Asda Pod in Highbridge publicising the scheme, as pictured here.
PC Stuart Curtis from Burnham Police told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The new roles are designed to enhance and assist the work of the police and provide additional support to local communities.”
“They assist local teams with a variety of tasks and projects, allowing officers to concentrate on core policing duties – which means more officers on the streets.”
Volunteer roles range from Special Constables to Neighbourhood Watch and Community Speed Watch Co-ordinators and the force is looking to extend the range of roles and opportunities.
PCSOs have been handing out information leaflets, crime prevention advice and materials about the volunteer initiative.
Current volunteers, assisted by PCSO’s, carried out speed checks on Berrow Road and along The South Esplanade on Friday during the police’s latest Operation Relentless Day.
PC Curtis said: ‘It was a very positive day and we were really encouraged by the level of interest from the public in the volunteering scheme. We had a great response and hope to follow up on some of those expressions of interests in our volunteers scheme.”
