Burnham-On-Sea police have this week launched a campaign to make sure local people and thousands of summer visitors to Brean and Berrow stay safe.
Over the summer officers will be using a hi-tech car number plate recognition system to stop and check vehicles with the aim of preventing drug crime, theft and road traffic offences.
The intelligence-led series of operations began at the end of April, when local emergency response officers were joined by specialist road police and dog handlers patrolling the area around Brean.
Twelve cars were stopped in the six-hour evening operation. Two were people dealt with for not wearing seatbelts and another for driving with no insurance.
Local Community Speed Watch volunteers are also due to be involved in the operation over the summer.
Acting Sergeant Scott Minall told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This is a safe area to live in and visit, but among the summer visitors there are always a few who plan to do more than enjoy the sun and sea. Our message to them? While they may be on holiday, local police are not!”
“We are determined to work with the local community to make sure that people enjoy a safe summer, whether they are local or visiting. Our hope is that our strong local presence will deter criminals and make people feel safe.”
