Burnham-On-Sea Police Station is to close and its officers are set to move into smaller new facilities at the town’s fire station, it has emerged this week.
The area’s top police officer told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week about the latest on the cost-saving plans.
Chief Inspector Sean Williams said: “In an effort to ensure we are being as efficient and cost-effective as possible, we have reviewed all of our estate over the past few years.”
“With many of our staff now based in Bridgwater, we no longer need such a big building in Burnham so we are able to move to smaller premises.”
“Several aspects of the current building, such as the old custody cells, are also no longer used and are not fit for purpose.”
“We will close Burnham-On-Sea Police Station and open a new station nearby with an enquiry office and local policing base.”
He added: “The current site is being prepared for sale and the plans for co-locating with the fire service are progressing.”
“The public should not see a change in the service we provide them in Burnham.”
He added that there are no fixed dates for the closure yet but that the community would be updated as the changes near.
Avon and Somerset Police has to make savings of £42m over four years to keep in line with the Government’s recent spending review.
