Town councillors have turned down a request from Burnham-On-Sea Police for a new permanent parking bay to be installed along the town’s High Street.
Councillors considered the proposal at their latest meeting where they raised concerns that it would take away space for shoppers and visitors.
Cllr Dennis Davey said: “I would question why the police need a highly-visible presence like this in the High Street and would like to understand the purpose in more detail. There are so few spaces in the High Street for the general public already.”
And Cllr Ken Smout said: “This would remove yet another parking space for shoppers, disabled motorists or those businesses who use the loading bays along the High Street.”
Members agreed not to support any location along the High Street but approved a proposal from Cllr Paul Young that a police parking bay could be introduced in College Street in the existing taxi bay, subject to the agreement of the taxi association.
