Police in Burnham-On-Sea are recruiting schoolchildren in their latest crime-fighting initiative to tackle distraction burglars.
On Tuesday (March 27th) they handed out greetings cards to children at St Andrew’s School to give to elderly and vulnerable relations, neighbours and family friends.
The cards are pre-printed with crime prevention advice and useful contact numbers, with blank spaces for children to decorate and add their own personal message.
PCSO Claire Chambers and PC Tracey Stiles (pictured) are running the initiative and have visited a number of village and town schools within the Burnham-On-Sea area and held assemblies, explaining distraction burglaries to children and performing role plays to give them a better understanding.
“We hope this initiative will remind the more vulnerable members of our community of the simple security steps they can take to deter these thieves,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“It also aims to raise awareness of the issue among the wider community, and help people play their part to protect their elderly and vulnerable friends and relations from these callous criminals. The simple message is ‘if in doubt, keep them out’.”
