Exclusive: Highbridge man arrested after police chase leads to river

-

A suspected thief jumped into the River Brue to try and avoid being captured during a police chase through Highbridge on Friday (August 21st).

The man – whose face has been obscured in this photo – was reported to have stolen a quantity of alcohol from the One Stop Shop in Market Street.

To try and evade capture, he ran away from the town centre, but police officers pursued him through nearby streets to the banks of the River Brue.

At one point, the man was seen jumping into the River Brue and swimming a short distance to try and avoid capture, as pictured here.

However, police officers were not far behind and managed to arrest him a few minutes later – after a ‘stun gun’ was pointed at the man, as pictured below.

Police spokesman Simon Whitby confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A 22 year-old man is being questioned in custody on suspicion of stealing alcohol from a shop in Market Street. The man was arrested after going into the river.”
