Police in Burnham-On-Sea issued a warning to motorists on Wednesday (July 16th), asking them to do their bit in ensuring they do not become victims of car crime this summer.
As many thousands of holidaymakers stream into the area during the summer months, the amount of vehicles parked in Burnham and Brean increases dramatically, according to town police.
This means more opportunities for casual thieves to take advantage of easy pickings left on display in vehicles. Particular hot spots tend to be spots such as the Coast Road from Burnham towards Brean and Berrow.
Burnham Neighbourhood Area Inspector Nick Greenhalgh told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “With the many thousands of tourists that come to the area over the summer, theft from motor vehicles can become a problem.”
“We have seen a slight rise in the number of car break ins at beauty spots and on the Coast Road in the last couple of weeks, but we’re hoping a scheme to point out vulnerable vehicles to their owners will make people pause for a moment and do everything possible to not make their car target.”
“We are already increasing police and Police Community Support Officers patrolling around the Burnham coastal areas, but my plea to anyone, whether they live here or are visiting, is to check your vehicle and ensure you are not likely to return and find yourself a victim of a break in.”
He added that bags, mobile phones, laptops, coats and any other valuables should always be removed from parked cars and doors should be locked, windows up and sun roofs closed.
