Burnham-On-Sea councillors call for ‘zero tolerance’ crime policy

-

Burnham-On-Sea town councillors have this week called on local police to take a tougher stance in tackling crime in the town.

Discussing the recent problems in South Street and the Rosewood estate at their meeting on Monday night (March 5th), town councillors said there needed to be a ‘zero tolerance crime policy’.

Town Council Leader Cllr Peter Clayton said: “I have every sympathy with residents of South Street and other areas of Burnham affected by vandals. The only real solution here is more police patrols.”

“We’ve also got to see more of the troublemakers being properly punished. Catching them and arresting them is just one aspect of policing.”

And Cllr John Morgan said: “It’s time Burnham had a zero tolerance policy in operation and for it to be properly enforced.”

Cllr Ken Smout warned: “There clearly is a serious problem in Burnham that will just get worse if it’s not properly tackled. It’s affecting the way of life for many people in the town and needs to be addressed now.”

Councillors will write to Burnham Police about the matter and invite a top officer to the council’s annual open meeting in April.
