Young Highbridge poet thanks readers after clinching contest votes

-

A young poet from Highbridge has thanked Burnham-On-Sea.com readers for helping her become the runner-up in a nationwide competition.

Shannon House, 16, was one of 12 young writers from more than 32,000 entrants who reached the finals of the 2013 Young Writers Poetry Games.

Shannon, a sixth form pupil from King Alfred School, entered her poem called ‘The Journey To The Underworld’ which impressed the judges so much that she reached the finals.

But to win one of the top prizes, she needed Burnham-On-Sea.com readers to vote for her. Thanks to our story here in December she received plenty of local support and has this week heard that she was runner-up.

Christine Alsford, her grandmother, said: “Thanks to the votes of Burnham-On-Sea.com readers Shannon gave the winner a run for her money and was hundreds of votes ahead of her nearest rival.”

“Shannon is an avid reader and so her prize of a Kindle e-reader is most welcome. We are very proud of her.”

The annual competition encourages young people across the country to engage in creative writing.
