Funding shortfall puts the future of Apex Park Play Day in jeopardy

-

The future of Highbridge’s popular Apex Park Play Day is in jeopardy due to a shortfall in funding.

The annual summer event, which was held on Wednesday and attracted over 6,000 people, needs £5,000 to meet its running costs and hold next year’s event.

More than 50 workshops and activities are held across the park with the aim of encouraging children to sample outdoor activities.

Chairperson Rosie Pike told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Everyone who attended this year’s event was handed a leaflet outlining how, without more donations, next year’s event will be in jeopardy.”

“We collected over £600 in donations on the day – double that of last year which is great – but because we can’t rely on receiving grant funding over the next 12 months, we will need extra help.”

“The organising committee rely on obtaining grants and sponsorship to run the event and it’s feared that unless further funding sources can be found Playday may not be able to continue into 2014. We’ve written to 80 local companies asking for help, but only four have responded.”

Sedgemoor District Council and the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group help out financially towards the event, as well as it being sponsored by a number of other local groups.

They include Children’s Centres in North Sedgemoor, Taunton and Brock House, the Somerset Play Forum, Community Games, Somerset County Council, Bridgwater Lions, Admiral Blake and Burnham Masonic Lodges.

Rosie added: “Money is tight and these sources are fully stretched. We need help.”

If your business or group would be able to provide sponsorship towards Playday 2014, or if you would be able to raise funds, contact Rosie on 07867967087 or by email at rosiepike47@gmail.com.
