Hundreds of children and their families descended on Highbridge’s Apex Park on Wednesday (August 4th) to take part in a range of activities on National Play Day.
The free event included over 35 workshops and activities including climbing, a forest school, willow sculptures, drumming workshops, inflatables, Native American crafts, circus skills, clay workshops, canoeing, archery and more.
Wet weather in the morning meant umbrellas and waterproofs were out in force, but brighter conditions in the afternoon brought out large crowds.
The day was held as part of a nationwide initiative to encourage thousands of children and young people to get outside and play at locally organised events.
Visitors were also able to see one of Burnham’s two rescue hovercrafts and learn how to play safely on local beaches. Burnham police were also in attendance to give advice on how to security mark childrens’ bicycles and other play equipment. And Burnham Fire Brigade were also at the event, letting youngsters clamber onboard one of their fire engines.
The event was funded by Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset Play Forum, Sedgemoor’s Childrens Centres and North Sedgemoor’s Locality Team.
Burnham’s Mayor and Mayoress Michael and Maria Clarke were among the special guests at the event alongside Sedgemoor District Council Chairman Jane Moreton and Highbridge County Councillor John Woodman.
