New-look play park opens next week as local parks get £114k revamp

-

A long-awaited new £64,000 play park is set to open next week, council bosses have announced as they begin an overhaul of several parks in Burnham and Highbridge.

Southwell Gardens play area in Highbridge has been given a major refurbishment and is set to open on Monday March 17th.

Sedgemoor District Council has been working with building firm Halcrow on delivering the new facilities over the past year, which replace the former 20-year old facilities behind the St John Ambulance HQ.

Sedgemoor has also just confirmed that the next local parks earmarked for improvement are Talbot Close, Stilings Close and Coleridge Gardens in Burnham and Highbridge.

£50,000 will be spent across the three parks – a total of £114,000 including Southwell Gardens, pictured here.

A timber playship is the focal point of the new play area in Southwell Gardens, alongside a bridge, slope slide with ladder, swing, roundabout and sea horse. The site has also been fully landscaped.

The refurbishments are being primarily funded by RLT2 outdoor play facility contributions with a proportion being drawn from Sedgemoor District Council’s Parks budget.

Councillor John Swayne, Sedgemoor’s Portfolio Holder for Community and Scrutiny, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Southwell Gardens play area upgrade is part of a major renovation of parks across the whole Sedgemoor district costing £177,000.”

“We are now moving onto phase two. The next parks tabled for upgrades are Talbot Close, Stilings Close and Coleridge Gardens and contracts will be tendered in the Spring.”
