Three play areas and a skate park are set to re-open next week as major upgrades are completed, Sedgemoor District Council said this week.
As first reported here, play areas in Crosses Penn, Coleridge Gardens and Stiling Close in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge are getting a £45,000 revamp. And Apex Skate Park is being given a £73,000 overhaul by the council.
Despite some criticism about the timing of the work in the school holidays, as reported here, the council says the overhaul will be finished in time.
Council spokeswoman Sam Taylor said: “The council has is pleased to announce the play areas in Coleridge Gardens and Stiling Close will re-open on Thursday 31st July.”
“The majority of Crosses Penn near the Manor Gardens play area has remained open to allow continued use by local families but its new and unique multi-play unit will also open on Thursday 31st July.”
“Apex Skate Park will informally open to the public on 1st August with a formal opening taking place at the annual Apex Playday on Wednesday 6th August.”
“Old equipment has been removed and the tarmac surface repaired. The re-vamped park which cost £72,994 will benefit from a new Half Pipe, Quarter Pipe, Planter, Wedge Flats, Bank Ramps and Pyramid Corner Ramp. Users of Apex Skate Park were consulted and wanted to see new equipment but with the same great layout as before.”
“All opening ceremonies will be attended by the Chairman of Council Councillor Peter Downing and Sedgemoor staff. Ward councillors have also been invited to attend. It is hoped local families and skate park users will also be in attendance to enjoy the great new equipment.”
The revamp of Crosses Penn play area near Manor Gardens, costing £15,000, will see a new unique multi-play unit is being installed which includes a slanted spinner, balance rope bridge, rail slide and various platforms to replace the existing frame in place which is at the end of its useful life.
Work to improve the park in Coleridge Gardens has also started, and a new multi-play unit with slide, spring see-saw and spinning bowl are being installed along with a new seat. The total work will cost £20,000.
The final play area to start in this round of improvements is Stiling Close in Highbridge. Work started on 21st July and includes a replacement set of swings, spring see-saw and spinning bowl along with a new seat and litter bin. The total value there willm be £10,000.
The three play area improvements are being funded by RLT2 Developer Contributions for Outdoor Play which are held by Sedgemoor District Council.
A planned make-over for Talbot Close play area in Highbridge is also currently out to tender with returns due by the end of July.
Alongside this a major refurbishment of the Southwell Gardens play area in Highbridge, costing £64,000, was completed earlier this year.
