Childrens play areas in Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge look set to receive a £19,000 boost following a meeting of town councillors this week.
Proposals to spend £12,995 in Highbridge and £6,005 in Burnham on new play equipment were approved by town councillors.
The funding has come from so-called ‘RLT2 Funds’, where property developers contribute to the provision of children’s play space and outdoor sport facilities.
The town council is recommending that new equipment is bought for Stilings Close, Talbot Close and Southwell Gardens in Highbridge, plus Coleridge Gardens in Burnham.
It came after Cllr Phoebe Harling, pictured above, presented a report to the council highlighting the poor state of play areas in the towns.
“We want to encourage children to get out and enjoy the fresh air,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com following Wednesday’s meeting.
“I’ve visited many of the public play areas in Burnham and Highbridge during recent days to check on their condition and help make the decision about where the funding should go. Some of our play areas have 30-year-old equipment that needs replacing.”
“I found the play area at Coleridge Gardens in need of modernisation, while Crosses Pen is in good order, Rosewood Avenue is fine, Apex is very good and Winchester Road is also good, but both Stilings Close and Talbot Close in Highbridge are in urgent need of modernisation.”
The recommendations will be considered by the district council shortly and a final decision is set to be made later in the year.
