Public meeting to be held today over Burnham-On-Sea wind farm plans

-

Local people with views about controversial plans to build a huge wind farm near Burnham-On-Sea will get an opportunity to speak during a special meeting this evening (Tuesday).

Broadview Energy has appealed to the Planning Inspectorate after the council rejected its plans to build four 130m-tall turbines at Pilrow Farm near Rooksbridge last year.

A planning inquiry is underway and the inspector overseeing it has organised a session for the public who have not already given their views to speak, however residents must register to speak.

The public session will be held at East Huntspill Village Hall at 7.30pm this evening.

Campaign group No Pilrow, which has been fighting the plans, has encouraged people to attend some or all of the eight-day inquiry to demonstrate the amount of public interest in the scheme.

A spokesman from NoPilrow told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Mrs Pat Ireland, founder of the Lights for Life charity, whose husband was killed on the A38 at Rooksbridge will be giving evidence early in the evening session. This stretch of A38 is designated by the appellant as the route for transporting aggregate and hence will see an increase in HGV movements.”

Anyone who wishes to speak at today’s meeting should contact Colin Arnold or Chris Gomm at the council on 0845 4082540.

Broadview says the wind farm could power 7,560 homes and the scheme, which will see the company donate £2,500 per megawatt of capacity, could generate up to £750,000 for community projects over its 25-year lifetime.

But the plans have been fought all the way by the No Pilrow campaigning group with the support of Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt, pictured right.

A Planning Inspector will consider evidence including written documents and witnesses, before sending a report to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Eric Pickles for a final decision.
