Burnham-On-Sea firefighters carried out one of their more unusual rescues on Tuesday evening (April 12th) when they were asked by the RSPCA to help retrieve a bird trapped in netting on top of a roof.
Crews used a tall ladder to safely reach the pigeon, which was tangled up in netting above the Nationwide Building Society in Victoria Street, as pictured here.
Wire cutters were used to release the bird before it was taken away by RSPCA carers for treatment shortly after 7pm.
RSPCA carer Sue Dobson, who took the bird away for treatment, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Several concerned residents let us know the distressed bird was trapped. Because it was so high up we called on the fire brigade to help and were very grateful for their assistance.”
A Burnham fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We get around two or three call-outs a year like this and unless we help there’s a risk that someone else might try climbing up to reach the bird and put their own welfare in jeopardy. We were happy to retrieve the bird.”
Nearby resident Joe Montgomery, who called out the RSPCA, said he was relieved to see the bird safely captured. “It had been stuck in the netting for well over a day and was clearly in a bad way,” he said.
