A huge 20-stone pig was rescued from a ditch by Burnham-On-Sea firefighters after being chased by a boar trying to mount her, a local farmer has said this week.

As first reported by Burnham-On-Sea.com here, fire crews were called to the farm at Lympsham at 5.45pm on Wednesday January 24th, after a kunekune pig called Penelope fell into a rhyne and became stuck.

The farm’s owner said he thinks Penelope must have been chased by a boar who was trying to mount her.

Aline Bennett at Hope Farm in Lympsham told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We presume that a boar was chasing her or tried to mount her and that’s when she fell into the rhyne.”

“When we went to feed the pigs, we noticed that one of them was missing and then saw she was in the rhyne.”

Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater firefighters were called in to safely pull the 20-stone pig free.

Aline said Penelope was unhurt by the ordeal and hads been moved to a secure pen overnight.

“The perky malvern boar finds her irresistable – they had 16 sows last time!”

Two fire appliances from Burnham-On-Sea and a special rescue team from Bridgwater were sent to the incident.

“The 20-stone pig, was retrieved by the special rescue team who used level one water safety equipment, a triple extension ladder and lighting,” said a spokesman, who added that the pig was uninjured.
