The expansion of Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront pier as part of a £100,000 overhaul has been delayed until next year.
Louise Parkin, who manages the Pavilion on The Esplanade, was granted permission to install a £60,000 high-tech folding roof and other improvements earlier this year.
She had initially planned to start the construction work this month, however she told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that the project has now been moved to next Spring.
“The materials are paid for and ordered, but we’ve decided to wait until next year for the calmer weather to go ahead with the building.”
“There are bound to be a few teething problems and whilst I don’t doubt that the new structure will withstand high winds, we want the work to go ahead with as few problems as possible, so we’re now looking at next Easter to get it installed.”
She added: “We are still as strongly committed to the project as ever – it really will be great for enabling us to serve food at The Pavilion all year round and in all weathers.”
Back in March, The Pavilion was granted approval for the work to install the controversial £60,000 high-tech folding roof along with another £40,000 of improvements. Sedgemoor district councillors said they wanted to help the economic vibrancy of the attraction, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Meanwhile, the Pavilion’s £100 weekly draws for coach drivers is continuing to be a success and is drawing extra visitors into the town. It has been extended to the end of September.
