The 100th anniversary of the First World War is being marked with special commemorations this weekend across the Burnham-On-Sea area.

Remembrance Day is being marked with solemn events across our area in churches with ceremonies this weekend.

Shop windows have also been decorated to mark the anniversary, including Burnham’s Royal British Legion branch, pictured below.

A WW1-themed coffee morning was held at St Andrew’s Church in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday where the pupils, pictured below, displayed some of their work alongside their poems about the war. They raised £47 for the Royal British Legion. See more details here about this weekend’s events at the church.

Mark Church near Burnham, pictured below, is also holding its own special Remembrance Weekend events which include on Saturday November 10th at 2.30pm a ‘Songs from the Wars’ afternoon with tributes to the fallen, memorabilia, poems and photos.

At Berrow Primary School, Robert Parker and his friends from the WW1 Berrow Commemoration group visited on Friday November 9th where authentic artefacts, a model of the trench system and war poetry were shared with the children.

The Stage 2 children performed a short drama which the children enjoyed and two of the pupils dressed in authentic girl guide uniforms.

On behalf of the WW1 Commemoration group, Robert presented each pupil with a small memento – a souvenir George V shilling presentation pack, a small gospel according to Saint John, and a piece of Trench Cake baked in the school kitchen.

“It was wonderful to bring the community together on such a poignant landmark and we hope that as a result further stronger connections will be established between the school and wider community,” said head teacher Lee Chandler.

Brent Knoll is holding a special concert called “100 Years On” at St. Michael’s Church on Saturday 10th November at 3pm. The concert includes children from Brent Knoll School reciting a poem “Who are these Men” written by a 12 year-old girl in 1966. All are welcome.

Children at Brent Knoll Primary School, pictured at the top of this page, have also created a Poppy cascade that was inspired by the Tower Of London Poppy Display. Each child at the school painted a poppy in the display.

At Highbridge’s St John’s Church a stunning display of over 460 poppies has been made by the children from Churchfield School for this weekend’s Remembrance commemorations, pictured below being assembled on Friday.

Several shops in Burnham-On-Sea have also decorated their windows with special displays to mark the anniversary, as pictured below.

Lowe’s Barber Shop in Burnham-On-Sea High Street has the image of a lone soldier painted on the front wall of its premises. Sue Ryder in Burnham High Street also had this colourful poppy-themed display.

Meanwhile, Somerset County Council‘s County Hall in Taunton has gone poppy-red for three days as Somerset County Council gives its support to Remembrance Day commemorations.

Council Leader, Cllr David Fothergill and Chairman, Cllr Nigel Taylor laying a wreath at the memorial.

The ‘Lest We Forget Flag’ has been flying at County Council HQ all week and the building is lit in red until Sunday evening.
