British Telecom has blamed a ‘computer error’ for a problem which left thousands of residents across Burnham-On-Sea without their telephone service on Friday morning (March 30th).
Outgoing and incoming calls were unavailable for thousands of residents for more than two hours, BT confirmed.
BT spokesman Jason Mann told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A software problem was reported at our telephone exchange in Burnham which led to the phone services of a large number of customers being unavailable.”
“The issue was first reported at 10.11am and was resolved after a reboot of the system at 12.27pm.”
Asked how many people suffered the problems, he said: “There were a substantial amount of customers affected – the numbers were in the thousands.”
“We apologise for any inconvenience this caused. Fortunately, incidents like this are very rare and we generally have a very reliable service.”
