Plans to move a phone mast in Burnham-On-Sea onto the town’s seafront were unveiled this week.
O2 is under pressure to move the mast on Marine Drive, pictured right, to a new location, and has submitted a pre-planning enquiry in which it asks to move it to the Marine Rescue Centre on the seafront.
Town clerk Eileen Shaw said: “The phone mast would take the place of the existing one in Marine Drive, whose validity has expired. An enforcement order has been issued on O2 to get it moved.”
The pre-planning enquiry was discussed at Monday’s town council meeting – where no strong objections were heard from councillors.
The proposal has the backing of Burnham’s Coastguard and BARB, the two groups based at the Marine Rescue Centre.
The proposal follows concern last summer about poor quality phone signals hampering sea emergencies in the area.
