New lease of life for disused phone box near Burnham bought for £1!

-

A disused phone box near Burnham-On-Sea has been given a new lease of life at the centre of the community after being bought from BT for just £1.

West Huntspill Parish Council has taken over the redundant red kiosk in Alstone Gardens and has turned it into a parish information point.

The phone fittings have been taken away and replaced with noticeboards and shelving for a soon-to-launch book exchange service.

Parish Council Clerk Alex Richards told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were considering buying and installing a new noticeboard in the village but the costs were over £400 so we started to consider the possibility of buying the old phone box from BT.”

“They offered it to us for the nominal fee of £1 – which is a huge saving on what we would have spent on the new noticeboard – so we were delighted to take it on.”

“It’s been well received by villagers and we’re intending to further develop it with the launch of a new book exchange service soon.”
