British Telecom has this week called time on six telephone boxes in the Burnham-On-Sea area, announcing that they are to be removed as part of a cost-cutting programme.
The half dozen pay phones – some of which are the traditional red boxes – have been chosen because BT says they are used less than once a month.
The boxes to be removed include those sited in Rectory Drive in Burnham (pictured), Penmoor Road in Berrow, The Causeway at Mark, East Brent in Highbridge, The Walrow in Highbridge, and at Basonbridge.
A BT spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are committed to providing a payphone service but usage has halved in the last two years. Before removing any kiosk with no alternative payphone within 400m we write to the local authority to obtain consent.”
