Over 1,300 concerned residents in Highbridge have signed a petition calling for two public gardens in the town to be safeguarded.
Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report in October how campaigners, pictured right, had launched the petition amid growing concern that the Town Green and Jubilee Gardens, next to Highbridge’s town clock, could be sold off to developers by cash-strapped Sedgemoor District Council.
One of the organisers, Pam Lyes, told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “We’ve had a very good response from people in the town and will be handing over the final petition to Sedgemoor District Council Chairman Jane Moreton on Wednesday this week.”
This petition calls for Jubilee Gardens and the Town Green to become Designated Open Spaces in perpetuity.
“The Gardens are already classed as an open space, but the Council can still sell them if they so desire after a consultation period with the public.”
Sedgemoor District Council’s Strategic Property Manager, Tim Mander, has tried to reassure residents that there are no plans to sell the land.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I am not aware of any recent approach or plans to sell Jubilee Gardens.”
