Pupils at St Joseph’s school in Burnham-On-Sea received a history lesson with a difference on Friday (September 17th).
Local cycling enthusiast Andy Brewer visited the school’s Year 5 children with a replica Penny Farthing bicycle wearing period costume to help them with their current study of the Victorians.
He also brought along several Victorian coins to illustrate why the bicycle is so named, including an 1876 Penny and an 1843 half Farthing.
The children were keen to see how to ride a Penny Farthing, including the technique for getting on and off, and stopping, as there are no brakes.
Andy talked with the children about some of the inventions and developments
from the 19th century that influence our lives today and discussed the development of bicycles.
Miss Counsell, teacher of Year 5, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The children really appreciated this visit, and I hope it brought to life their learning of the Victorian era.”
“The children were very attentive and keen to share what they have learned about the Victorians and life during that period.”
